Wednesday, February 6, 2019 | 6 PM – 9 PM: Innovative Stab Book Binding - Location: The Soapbox: Community Print Shop & Zine Library, 4700 Kingsessing Ave, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19143
.
.
.
Stab bindings can be enormously creative and visually distinctive. Learn or review a basic 4-hole stab binding. Then, learn a custom variation, Becca Hirsbrunner's Star Binding, and discuss how to develop your own patterns. This workshop builds skills for those who have worked with the stab binding before, while being approachable for beginners. $35, or $30 for Members.

About the instructor:
TERESA SILVA is a self-taught artist who works primarily in paper and thread. Her artistic work engages with the hidden and the unknowable-exploring function and/or femininity through a personally feminist lens. Her handbound books usually feature the binding technique as the focus point and she experiments often with her own variations of exposed bindings. She also works in linoleum/block printing and embroidery. Currently working on her archaeology doctorate, Teresa has been working on quite a few projects lately in a couple of different places. You can find her online at instagram.com/unwornworld.

Letter to the Public

January 10-26th

Opening reception January 10th, 6-9pm

Five years ago after the new years, we asked several artists to sit down with someone for dinner, record what they ate, and make a written prediction for the coming year. Every January since, we have continued collecting predictions, publishing them in free booklets. Last year we explored how the predictions were documented by focusing on the act of listening with an exhibition called Sound Affect, which converted the Icebox into a recording studio.

This coming year’s exhibition Letter to the Public will focus on the intersection of language, text, and sound. A 50 foot ramp puts a single audience member in the middle of the Icebox, and in front of a microphone transcribing every word spoken into a real-time projection. Every word becomes pixels of light in a darkened room as the audience below matches sound to text. Letters to the Public will be open to the public for the month of January, recorded, and shared. Here is a link to last year's recordings, Sound Affect: https://soundcloud.com/icebox-project-space.
