”Forty years ago, Dian Fossey and the world were devastated when a family of mountain gorillas — named Group 4 — was decimated by poachers. Group 4 was the very first group of gorillas to be studied by Dr. Fossey after she established the Karisoke Research Center and included individuals like Uncle Bert, who she named after her own uncle, and Digit, the first gorilla to accept her presence.” Over the course of 1978, four gorillas in Group 4 were killed by poachers and another three died as a result of the group’s disruption. By December of that year, only three of the original 11 group members remained together.
With her beloved Group 4 destroyed, and the mountain gorilla population headed toward a low point of only about 240 individuals, Fossey feared the species would go extinct before the year 2000.
Instead, today, due to the intensive protection efforts Fossey initiated, mountain gorillas have reached a new historic milestone: their numbers have gradually increased over the past 30 years, and are up from 240 to 604, based on the latest census. (Another separate population of 400 individuals bring the total number of mountain gorillas to just over 1,000). I photographed this magnificent mountain gorilla in the Volcanos National Park, Rwanda.
Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to experience a clear night near the Nyiragongo stratovolcano situated in the Virunga Mountains in Congo DR. Photo @ladzinski / High winds stretching the clouds into lenticular formations at sunset over #TorresDelPaine ‘s iconic Los Cuerno peaks. Notoriously one of the most windy places on earth, this is a landscape that has been carved out over hard years of wind, weather and time. Photo by @amivitale // Most of northern Kenya is arid country, scorched and roasting under the equatorial sun, and sometimes going for months or even years without a drop of rain. The landscapes vary from craggy, volcanic cinder fields to impassable areas of sand-dune systems and gritty scrub. Sometimes, hidden in the middle of it all, there are hidden gems like this, a water hole surrounded by old lava.

The World at Night (TWAN)
Wish you clear skies this Sunday night to Monday morning. A Lunar Eclipse happens on January 20-21, with about an hour of totality visible on Sunday evening (west coast) and near midnight (east coast) from both South & North America, the entire Atlantic, and in the morning sky of Monday 21st near moonset in Europe (better in western & northern most), a good part of Africa, Russia, and Middle East (in an open western horizon before sunrise). The Hawaiian Islands will also see the eclipsed moon rising at dusk on Sunday.
These two telephoto images are of 2011 and 2016 eclipses. The first time I saw this beauty as a teenager in the 1992 lunar eclipse, it introduced me to astrophotography, the career I followed through the years with love for stars and protection of natural night skies. Explore more @babaktafreshi.

Photo by @PaulNicklen // The aurora borealis illuminates the dark Yukon sky as this small glowing cabin brings warmth to a chilly Arctic night.
