  • As true today as it was in 1947.
Those apprentices who expect to find satisfactory repairing and servicing of timepieces an easy profession to master are doomed to disappointment and unless this erroneous impression is corrected, they will find themselves in the “Tinker” classification. It requires little skill or training to make a timepiece “tick”; but to make it “keep time” requires knowledge and skill.
Successful servicing and repairing timepieces requires unusual mechanical aptitude; a thorough understanding of the theory of horology and its practical applications; long and exacting training in the skillful application of the various tools and equipment of the profession, before one is capable of satisfactorily restoring timepieces to their original timekeeping condition.

  • After filing at least three practice squares, with the third and "smallest" one being pocket watch sized, the y1 students apply square heads to the two hand adjustment screws on the parallel clamping vise, bevels and all.
    .
Then they make four brass winding stems, then four steel winding stems, and files squares onto each of those. Then they are at the starting point to maybe make an acceptable winding stem for an actual watch. JP needed four attempts to make his three squares, and here's the first of his screws - just finished this aft.
