  • Look at that fucking flower! Shit it's good to be alive!😂🌻
Lol sometimes it just takes a little perspective!! 😉
I love when this meme rolls around because every time it does, about five of you tag me in it and it makes my day every time.💛✨

I'm hoping everyone is feeling a positive shift from the blood moon last night! With the new moon I have begun testing the viability of my new Mexican sunflower seeds, so stay tuned for when those drop!
    -
In the meantime, those who are beginning to plan for spring planting, start thinking about companion plants and pollinator gardens! When you increase pollinator activity in your garden you increase the chances of yields by almost 20 to 30%, and in some cases up to 50%.

So make sure you're including one of our pollinators FAVORITE flower...THE SUNFLOWER!! With it's composite flower head, you can count on the entire disk to be covered with pollen verses other flowers consisting of only a few anthers to count on receiving pollen from. The sunflower literally has hundreds of disc flowers to access during it's entire blooming period.

But you MUST be careful when it comes to choosing sunflower seed. There are a lot of varieties that are genetically modified for the floral industry so that they specifically do not produce pollen. I can guarantee that when you buy Botanical Jay sunflower seeds, you'll be receiving 100% non-GMO, organic sunflower seed, GUARANTEED to produce pollen.

  • I'm in love with all the flowering agaves out here lately!! They have provided both nectar and pollen for bees in this super late season. If it's early enough in the morning, I'll go out of my way to go look at the blooms to see the honeybee activity. I took this video at the San Diego Botanic Garden. My other agave flower video was taken in the greenhouse I work in. Two totally different spots!

And check out those pollen pants!!
    -
You see those clumps on the hind legs? That's pollen!! Bees have special hairs and indents on their back legs where pollen is collected and stored until they get back to the hive.
As bees fly through the air, they build up a positive static-electric charge on their body. This helps them to collect the pollen dust from the flowers they visit since the negatively charged pollen will be attracted to, and stick to, the bee’s body in much the same way that a balloon rubbed against a wool sweater will stick to the wall.
    -
Once the bee’s body is covered with fine pollen grains, the bees will use stiff hair-like structures on her legs to groom themselves and “comb” all the pollen off their body. Some honey or nectar is regurgitated from the honey stomach and mixed with the pollen grains in order to help them stick together.
    -
When a pollen basket is full it can weigh as much as 0.01 g and contain as much as 1,000,000 pollen grains.
    -
Once back at the hive, foraging bees will use their saliva and legs to remove the pollen from their pollen baskets and dispose of the pollen into a cell where it is used primarily for feeding and raising the young.
