  • Jackie (Pablo Larrain, 2016)
Wow, 2016 really was a busy year for Pablo Larrain, fresh off his disconcerting drama about fallen priests in the form of 2015’s The Club, he then went on to not only direct the artfully playful literary chase thriller Neruda, but this incredibly refreshing and fantastically executed biopic of the iconic Jackie Kennedy. With a caster-best performance from Natalie Portman in the titular role, Jackie examines the immediate aftermath of JFK’s assassination from the perspective of his widow, who was forced to grieve in full view of an anxious public, as her sorrow became intertwined with the history of her country. With Larrain at the height of his technical abilities, he weaves an impressionist tale of political tragedy, where even in the aftermath of the death of her husband, Jackie Kennedy is still forced by circumstance to perform a facade for the outside world, even as she threatens to crack under immense pressure. It’s such a refreshing departure from so many blandly directed prestige biopics they fail to really get under the skin of their subjects, but here, the intimacy of Larrain’s style gets us in uncomfortably close to his subject and almost forces us to grieve with her, and makes us bear witness to someone who is on the precipice of breaking completely. It’s a grandly shot, and exceptionally bittersweet melodrama, about a person who to us seems almost alien in her grandeur and strength, and yet despite laying bare her weaknesses in the face of impossible demands, still manages to do right by her, and paints her to be someone who was far more than just a presidential widow. Highly recommended. #film #cinema #movie #greatfilm #greatmovie #filmblog #filmcollection #filmoftheday #filmmaking #filmreview #filmposter #filmtime #jackie #pablolarrain #2016 #natalieportman #petersarsgaard #gretagerwig #billycrudup #johnhurt #biopic #drama #historical #jackiekennedy

  • Natalie Portman graduated from Harvard and has an IQ of 140. She is fluent in 5 languages including English. She’s a bad ass bitch! (It’s funny that she did a parody of Easy E’s song because you’d never expect her to do such a thing, it was hilarious!)
