- Today we have a character created by another fellow RPG gamer from back in the day, Randy Smith. In our superhero game, we decided to put on the black hat for a change and created a team of supervillains, and set about to rob things and create mayhem. Centipede was Randy's bad guy, and had the ability to tunnel underground and had a varying arsenal of weapons built into his armor. I say, 'varying', because almost every session, Randy would have drawn Centipede into a slightly different configuration and had also seemed to gain and lose powers in his armor. Strictly speaking, this wasn't particularly kosher in gaming, because once you write up your character, then you can't change their write-up until you gain some experience points in-game to improve your skills or powers or armor of whatever.
We gave him a ration of shit about it every so often, but soon it became Centipede's gimmick, slightly modifying his armor before each adventure. This led me to think about using him as a character in an actual comic story - what if a guy showed up in armor, committing crimes, that always had a similar color scheme, but varied in their design just about every time? Would you think it was one guy who couldn't settle on a design? Or would you think that since he always had a certain color scheme and always had the ubiquitous centipede emblem of some sort on his outfit, that it was actually more than one person, maybe even an organization? I mean, how could one guy have THAT many different kinds of armor, short of Tony Stark? Gotta be a secret army of some kind, right? Well, that is the kind of speculation that Centipede would hear about and eventually try to foster in all his encounters - that this was a big, dangerous, well-supplied subversive group rather than one guy with a arsenal of different armored suits. I still think it could be a fun idea, played right.
