  • Some thoughts that have been percolating for a while and were pushed to the forefront after watching the first episode of Dynasties... I wish that more people would react with compassion rather than anger when they hear about wildlife poisoning. Yes, it's absolutely horrible and has devastating consequences on the ecosystem. I will never deny those facts.

    BUT.

Conservation does not exist in a vacuum anymore. The people living alongside predators deserve to thrive as well. There is absolutely no reason that we as conservationists cannot find solutions that benefit both wildlife and people. Approaching these problems in an antagonistic manner won't solve anything. It will only exacerbate the situation and alienate the local communities, who will ultimately refuse to adopt any changes/practices that you (the conservationist) suggest. They have every right to tell you where to shove it.

The two most important lessons I learned while I was in Namibia were this: listen to the communities, and always, always be compassionate. Farmers have every right to be upset when they lose their livestock - that's their livelihoods and how they can afford to feed their families. What would you do, in their shoes? We need to pull off our Western blinders and view the issues from their perspectives. We need to respect the people co-existing with wildlife and the cultures they come from. We may not necessarily agree with all of their cultural practices, but we can't just go in and impose what we think is "right." Compromise is possible.

Conservation is the most effective when it involves the communities and ties them directly into conservation efforts. Full stop.
